Status and Permits

Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon corais couperi)

Federal

"The Federal (USA) Government considers Eastern Indigos (Drymarchon corais couperi) "Threatened" or "Endangered". Classified as such, they cannot be sold, traded, or bartered for in interstate commerce without a federally issued permit. At this time the person you need to contact at the USF&G to obtain a permit is:

Victoria Davis
US Dept of Fish and Wildlife 1875 Century Blvd. Ste. 200 Atlanta, GA 30345

(404) 679-4176

Federal permits for Eastern Indigos cost $100.00 and are valid for 90 days.
If you want to buy an Eastern Indigo from someone within your own state, the only regulations will be those of your particular state. No Fed permits are required for INTRA-state commerce."

Here is a link to the actual forms that you can download, print, and then get the permit process rolling. This will make it so you can skip the step of having Victoria Davis send you the permit forms. You'll need "Adobe Acrobat Reader", linked here, to read it. Don't be intimidated by all the forms. You only need deal with pages 1 following the instructions on pages 14, 15,16.

State

It is illegal to keep/breed Eastern Indigos in Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, New Jersey, New York & Mississippi without a special permit.  Some of the permits are difficult to obtain due to either requirements of the permit, or bureaucratic delays.
So far, these are the only states that we "know" will not allow the keeping/breeding of the Eastern Indigo without a special state issued permit.  ~
